Paralympic fun at Wandsworth and Battersea

At Disability Sports Coach (DSC) we’ve enjoyed a summer packed full of Paralympian celebrations!

We had a fantastic time at Wandsworth Council’s Paralympic festival held at Tooting Bec athletics track in August.

Our coaches delivered Boccia and tennis sessions at the festival, while staff and members were interviewed about the Paralympics by journalists from RTL, the most listened to commercial radio station in France.

The start of September saw an amazing day of Paralympic sport at Battersea Power Station.

Our coaches were at the ParalympicsGB fan zone with Every Body Moves.

It was great to deliver Boccia sessions to around 100 disabled and non-disabled people, coached by Jake and Devalle and supported by DSC’s Alex. We also met Paralympic table tennis player Jack Hunter-Spiver and Grace Clough, a Paralympic rower.

First-hand account

DSC club member Andre Oppong enjoyed the events and has written a first-hand account of his experiences.

Andre wrote: “At the Wandsworth Paralympics Festival, I was able to take part in some of the activities like hockey, Boccia, tennis, football, zumba and golden ball with my friends from Disability Sports Coach.

“During the hockey game, Zoe the coach from London Youth Games, showed me how to dribble in and out of the cones. Towards the end of my hockey game, I did some snakes and ladders with the hockey sticks as part of the cool down session.

“From there, I moved on to golden ball with my blindfolds on and scored loads of points before I left.”

Sounds like a good one Andre!

At Battersea, Andre tried out the recumbent bike, (he’s pictured with coach Jake), and enjoyed playing Boccia with coach Devalle.

Andre said: “After spending hours playing Boccia, I took part in blind football and ended up with a sliver medal for staying behind to complete my passing and dribbling skills ‘brilliantly’, as Ciaran the football coach said.”

We love it when our members tell us about their experiences! At Disability Sports Coach, we exist for our members and look forward to seeing them return to our clubs in September.
