Temi’s journey from volunteer to coach

It’s our 10th birthday! 🎉
Our award-winning inclusive community sports clubs first launched in September 2013.
Since then our charity has delivered inclusive sport sessions to 21,000 disabled people and their families.
To mark the occasion we are bringing you 10 stories from our charity. Temi’s story is the second in our series.

Temi’s story

‘As a disabled person, I know that sometimes people may not want to try something as they don’t want to fail. It’s important to remember that the smallest step forward is improvement.’

“I found out about DSC through my college Roots & Shoots.

I’ve always loved watching and participating in a variety of sports so when my college asked me if I would like to do a work placement as a volunteer at DSC, I was really happy.

After leaving college I stayed on as a volunteer and DSC supported me to get a lot of experience and qualifications. I am now working as a coach supporting and running my own sessions.

I really enjoy seeing participants progressing whatever their abilities are, learning new skills, making new friends, gaining confidence and enjoying themselves.

As a disabled person, I know that sometimes people may not want to try something as they don’t want to fail.

It is important to remember that the smallest step forward is improvement, even if that means just turning up to the session.

I always try and adapt my sessions so that everyone feels that they are taking part.”
