Celebrating our volunteers

This Volunteers’ Week, national disability charity Activity Alliance visited one of our multi-sport sessions in Hackney and published a feature on their website about the role disabled volunteers play in our work.

Courtney has autism, and was interested in volunteering with us because she has experienced first-hand what sport can do. She said, “I know how much sport has been able to help me cope and manage some struggles that I have. So, I thought it was a good opportunity to help others find a purpose and find strength, and be happy through sport as well.”

Selim also has autism, and wanted to understand adaptive sport more deeply. He said, “The reason I applied to become a volunteer for Disability Sports Coach was because I wanted to learn more about adaptive sports…I wanted to bring some of my experiences into Disability Sports Coach so I can help out people with various disabilities.”

What struck us most in the Activity Alliance piece was how both of them described the moment a session clicks. Courtney said, “Each session you watch people progress and enjoy it more, get engaged more. It’s just so nice to see everyone come together and be able to have fun doing something together as a little team.”

We are grateful to Activity Alliance for taking the time to visit, to listen, and to share these stories with their audience. Visit the Activity Alliance website to read more.

And if Courtney and Selim’s words have made you think about volunteering with us, we would love to hear from you.
