Disability Sports Coach announce new Chair of Trustees

Disability Sports Coach is delighted to announce the appointment of Karen Sorab OBE as our new Chair of Trustees.

Karen joined the Board of Trustees in January 2022, and brings with her a wealth of experience. She is a social entrepreneur with over 20 years senior leadership experience in the charity sector. She is the founder, former CEO and Chair of BeyondAutism, a charity providing education for people with autism and training for those who support them.

Karen’s daughter Alex is an active member of Disability Sports Coach’s Community Clubs and online activities. Alex has grown in confidence and independence through her participation in the activities offered by the charity, allowing her to discover different sports and make lots of new friends.

Speaking about her appointment, Karen said:

“I am delighted to take on the role of Chair of Trustees at Disability Sports Coach and proud to be part of an organisation that provides and promotes access to sports for all disabled people. I am looking forward to working with CEO Peter Ackred, the executive team and the dedicated Board of Trustees to deliver our vision to enable all disabled people to enjoy active lives and feel connected to a supportive community.”

Karen takes over from Chris Mounsey-Thear, who has been Chair since 2012. Chris has overseen the growth of the charity’s Community Clubs, which have supported 21,000 disabled people and their families to date. Whilst stepping down as Chair, Chris will remain on the Board as a Trustee.

Chris said:

“I feel incredibly lucky to have been Chair of Disability Sports Coach, working with the dedicated and talented team to establish itself and deliver such inspiring and impactful work. I am equally pleased to remain involved in the Board and support Karen Sorab as she takes up the position. Karen has such a wealth of experience and expertise that we will greatly benefit from, and will help even more people enjoy the physical, social and mental wellbeing benefits from sport.”
