Hundred’s of Disabled Londoner’s enjoy annual Summer Festival 2018

On Friday 27th July 2018, 400 disabled people and their family, friends and carers celebrated by being active at our 4th Community Club Summer Festival, sponsored by LMAX Exchange

Our Community Club members, community groups, Disabled People’s Organisations and new individuals from across London returned to Westway Sports & Fitness Centre, to celebrate another year of our Community Club programme. Getting active through 21 different sports, meeting our special guests, watching two performances and enjoying an array of new additions were the highlights from this year’s event.

Our end of year Summer Festival aims to inspire disabled people to be active, try new sports, meet friends, discover sport and non-sporting activities that our partners provide.

As well as amazing inclusive sports activities, we also had a rousing performance by the Royal Society for Blind Children who performed at the half way point to raise awareness of activities available outside the world of sport.

The participants also enjoyed the new 2018 additions including raising the trophy at the selfie station, cheering for their favourite during the Special Guest Showdown and taking part in our new fitness zone.

The first ever DSC Special Guest Showdown had the crowd going wild. Kate Grey, Hassan Khan and Spark the Cat went head to head tacking various obstacles (including taking a golfing shot at our CEO!) to be named the ‘Ultimate Special Guest’. It was tight, but it was QPR’s Mascot Spark the Cat who was crowned the winner.

The Summer Festival wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the help and support of everyone involved. We had over 70 individuals helping out on the day, so a special thanks must go to our activity providers, DSC coaches and volunteers, and volunteers from PCubed, BT and Hilton London Metropole and of course our special guests Kate Grey, Hassan Khan and Spark the Cat – QPR’s very friendly mascot!

We had a great day and it looks like you did too!

Peter Ackred, Disability Sports Coach CEO: “We witnessed another fantastic event that we are incredibly proud to host, along with our partners support, for hundred’s of disabled people in the community. Though the day is an annual celebratory event, the target for us is to ensure disabled people find out about more opportunities to be regularly active, all year round. Our Community Clubs provide weekly, local activities but the festival acts as a great way for our partners to promote their activities too. It is only with the support of sponsors and those partners that we are able to achieve this, so thank you.”

Club Member: “Fantastic day, please don’t change a thing!”

Club Parent: “I just wanted to say a massive thank you to you and the team for a wonderful day today! The kids and I really enjoyed the day and all the different activities on offer! Everyone we came into contact with were so lovely, helpful and knowledgeable.”

Kate Grey, Former GB Paralympic Swimmer: “Once again the DSC Summer Festival was a huge success. This was my third year attending and I really enjoyed seeing familiar faces from previous years as well as lots of new faces too. The variety of sports and activities available is what makes the festival so unique and a brilliant day out for all abilities.”

Conor McBrearty, The Tennis Foundation: “Really enjoyable day, it was great to engage with so many people and we managed to raise awareness of our upcoming tennis events.”

Morris Nelson, DSC and DASL (Disability Advice Service Lambeth) volunteer: “It was the best Disability Sports Coach event I’ve attended!”

Ian Carter, Travel Counsellors, Marketplace Stall holder: “The whole day seemed very well organised and everyone we met were so friendly too.”]

Janja, Hilton London Metrople Volunteer: “Our team had a really good time and we enjoyed every minute with all the children and their carers. The best part for me was seeing their excitement and passion to do all the activities; nothing was too difficult for them.”

Thanks again for joining us and we look forward to seeing you again at our Community Clubs in September!
