London Sport Awards 2018 – We’ve been shortlisted twice!

We’re excited to announce that we have been shortlisted for 2 awards at this year’s London Sport Awards on the 8th March 2018!

Our outstanding coaches and volunteers have been shortlisted for the Workforce Award, whilst Omar Shariff has been shortlisted for the Volunteer of the Year award the annual award ceremony hosted by Wembley Stadium.

We’d just like to thank our coaches & volunteers for their fantastic contribution to the activities we deliver. We also wish Omar the very best of luck for the awards. Now here is why we were shortlisted!

The Workforce Award – Disability Sports Coach

In 2017, we have trained and deployed a workforce comprising of 95 coaches and volunteers to help support the delivery and growth of disability sport. 32 coaches and 63 volunteers have been integral to supporting disabled Londoners access over 1,814 hours of inclusive activity across 22 London Boroughs.

Regular activities have been delivered for over 1000 disabled people who attend 11 Community Clubs (weekly pan-disability sports sessions for disabled people) and over 30 other organisation’s activities including Schools, Colleges and Universities, NGB’s, Disabled People’s Organisations, youth centres and community groups.

The quality of delivery has ensured a better sporting experience for disabled people and our activities saw a staggering 13,000 visits.

Volunteer of the Year Award – Omar Shariff

Omar, 34 from Barking, has been volunteering weekly with Disability Sports Coach (DSC) at Community Club Hillingdon (multi-sport sessions for people with varying disabilities) and a Young Hackney disability session in Haggerston for over a year. Although his time at DSC has been relatively short, Omar has become an integral part of the team and his dedication and commitment is reflected within the member’s appreciation and skills progression.

Omar explained why: “My reason for wanting to work within he voluntary sector and for people from different backgrounds stems from how I was treated as a youngster due to my disability, and felt the need to help others overcome these barriers in their life.”

In 2017, Omar clocked upan astounding 2,376 miles travelling to sessions! This includes travelling 48 miles from East to West London every Saturday for Club Hillingdon and 18 miles every Thursday for Young Hackney. These figures do not even include any additional sessions, one of them being in Stoke Mandeville. Again Omar did this all voluntary!
