Round Up: Mayor of London Community Athletics Programme

At the tail end of 2017, our coaches have been busy delivering a wide range of inclusive Athletics sessions, generously funded by the Mayor of London’s Community Athletics Programme.

A grant of just under £5,000 was put to great use in establishing Athletics sessions in 11 of the London Boroughs which amounted to over 36 hours of specialist coaching for disabled people.

The sessions focussed on the key fundamentals of Athletics – Throwing, Running and Jumping – and were delivered in fun and innovative ways. The funding also allowed us to purchase Athletics equipment from which the participants benefited greatly and can be used for years to come.

Hugh Elsegood, DSC’s Sport & Physical Activity Manager and lead on the programme, said: “Indoor Athletics is fun for our coaches to teach as there is so much scope for creativity and adaptation. We are grateful to the Mayor of London for providing this funding which has helped enrich the lives of many disabled people and has allowed them to enjoy the numerous benefits associated with being active”.

Additionally, our coaches also supported 50 hours of deliver for Fulham FC Foundation, Newham Beagles Athletics Club & Havering Council’s successful athletics programmes too!
