Sunday Funday – DSC members take on Lee Valley’s White Water Rafting

On Sunday 20th August, 16 DSC Community Club members braved the adventurous London 2012 White Water Rafting course at Lee Valley’s White Water Centre in Hertfordshire.

We know a lot of our members have been missing our weekly sport sessions while the clubs are on summer break so we arranged our 1st Community Club Outing. In partnership with Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, we organised a trip to their White Water Centre to take part in white water rafting, something new and exciting for our members!

We started the day by travelling by coach to the centre. Once we arrived our members were kitted out in wetsuits, wet boots, helmets and buoyancy aids ready to take on the water. After a grueling swim assessment, which our members had to maintain a float position down the rapid stream followed by an escape swim of the choppy waters, it was time to go to the rafts were the fun began.

Our members were split into 2 rafts (hopefully not competing against each other) and they headed up the escalator to begin the course. Everyone was full of excitement, nervousness and anticipation. They dipped over the first peak and were off, paddling through the waves, dodging obstacles and most importantly trying not topple over. It was a close call for one of the rafts who collided with another, causing them to nearly flip! Luckily they managed to stay on-board and above the water but a few paddles might have got lost along the way.

Our members all had a splashing time and they even got to see the Team GB Under 23’s in action!

Club Development Officer, Lauren loved the day commenting: “Going white water rafting is something a lot of our members have never thought to do, never thought they could do or have never had the opportunity to do, so it was great to give them the chance. Our members never stopped smiling throughout the day and are even asking when we can go again! Special thanks to Lee Valley White Water Centre, for making the day completely accessible and so enjoyable.”
